Band Concert a Huge Success

Tuesday evening, the Port Orange Music Academy played for a packed house at their first concert of the year.  The Advanced, Jazz and Elite bands each played a selection of songs directed by Mr. Ed Clowers.  There was even a rendition of What Becomes of  the Broken Hearted, beautifully sung by Emma Murray.  It was a great night for the kids that showed off all their hard work in preparing for this event.  Thank you to everyone who helped make this a success.  A big ”thanks” to Port Orange United Church of Christ for allowing the kids to practice and have their concert at the church.

From the News Journal;

“They’re Grand Champions again!”

“Proving that last year was no fluke, The Port Orange Music Academy, formerly known as Spruce Creek Elementary Band, were named Grand Champions of the OrlandoFest Music Festival for the second consecutive year. The Academy entered its Advanced and Jazz bands, under the direction of Ed Clowers and his son Brent. Each band played three songs. Both bands received superior and gold rankings for their performances. In capturing the Grand Champions award, Port Orange Music Academy, which is made up of 3rd through 5th grade musicians, topped two high school bands…”

OrlandoFest Competition 2012 – Update

POMA COMPETITION UPDATES (As of 5/28/12)

The performance times for the bands have changed to earlier times. The Concert Band is now performing at 8:35 am and the Jazz Band is now performing at 9:55. This means that we have to leave for Orlando earlier in the morning than previously thought! We are now asking kids to arrive at the church by 5:30 am. The bus will leave promptly at 6:00 am. All kids must ride the bus. No kids are allowed on the bus if they have not yet turned in their signed permission slips. If you need another form or if you are not sure that your child’s form got turned in, please contact Dawn Alves at dmalves2000@yahoo.com.

Kids must wear their POMA band shirt and full-length khaki pants. Kids are also asked to wear black, closed-toe shoes. No sandals or flip-flops. Our additional order of POMA shirts has arrived. Shirts are $14 each. Please contact Mr. Clowers for shirt sizes and availability. Parents and chaperones can also purchase POMA t-shirts for $10, if they would like to help show support. They are not required, however.

We do have final confirmation that the awards ceremony will be held at the performance site, which is the Olympia High School in Orlando. The address is 4301 S Apopka Vineland Rd, 32835. Directions to the school, as well as from the school to Universal, will be available at the concert on Thursday, 5/31. The performance and the awards ceremony are free for family and friends to watch, so we encourage you to come and support the band. There will be a 30 minute clinic for each band as part of the awards ceremony.

We have just learned that there will be vendors at the High School, so lunch can be purchased there, for much less than it would cost at Universal. A hamburger, for example, is $2.50 and a cheese pizza is $2.00. Additional details will be sent out very soon, so please keep checking your emails.

We will leave Olympia High School around noon. This means getting to Universal at approximately 12:30. We will have about 6 hours to enjoy the parks. If you ordered a $99 Universal ticket thru us from OrlandoFest, you can pick it up at the High School upon completion of the ceremonies. If you are taking your child with you from the competition site, you must sign them out before doing so.

We ask that you please send money with your child for lunch, dinner, snacks, drinks, and souvenirs.
The bus will be locked during the day. Please discuss with your child about whether to leave phones, ipods, etc. on the bus, or to bring them into the parks. Your child may also need sunscreen, a change of clothes, and a plastic bag for wet clothes, especially if they are planning on doing any water rides.

Please remind your child that they must behave in an appropriate manner while at the park and must be accountable to their chaperone’s instructions. We will ask the kids and their chaperones to meet back at the bus at 6:30 pm. The bus will leave by 7:00 and we should be back at the church by 8:30 pm. Please make arrangements in advance to pick up your child at that time.

We know this is a lot of information, but we wanted to keep you as updated as possible as we get ready for the big day onSaturday, June 2nd.

Any questions, please contact Joyce Darcy at sjdarcy@bellsouth.net or dmalves2000@yahoo.com.

Thank you!

Port Orange Christmas Parade 2011

Great time had by all at the Port Orange Christmas Parade!

The Port Orange Christmas Parade was the Academys first official performance. The day started off cloudy and with a lot of nervous kids full of energy waiting for the show to start. It would end with the sun shining and the kids full of pride and accomplishment.

Last minute band meeting

Port Orange Music

It was hard to believe they had never walked in formation before. On top of the music they practiced for the parade they also had to learn to march, in step, while playing. That is a lot for 3rd,4th and 5th graders. But they made it look easy! Of course with the experience of Port Orange Music Academys (POMA) band director, Mr. Ed Clowers, the kids were in good hands. We were also honored to have the assistance of Mr. Brent Clowers, band director for Holly Hill middle school and son of Ed Clowers. They worked well together calming fears and making sure everyone was in tune. They handled all the usual last minute problems calmly, always instilling confidence in their nervous kids. By the time the last preparations were made and the last practice and warm-ups were done the kids were eagerly awaiting the start of the parade with confidence.

Our parents are the best ! Not only did they decorate the float, getting to the parade very early, they also walked the whole route right along with their children!

At the end of the day the kids were tired but still smiling. They were just as excited at the end of the parade. They were laughing and talking about how well it all went. Most of the kids were off to finish watching the parade. They would carry this victory with them for sometime . As I watched them leave I thought how great for them to be part of such a wonderful program.

WHEN:  12:00 Noon (Students will need arrive no later than 12:00 and be signed in by a parent) – The parade doesn’t start until 2:00, but we have guests from Holly Hill K-8 School joining us for rehearsal ahead of time.

WHERE:  Parade Position “A-2” (located on Jackson Street next to Wendy’s).  Due to road closures, entering Jackson Street from Spruce Creek Road will be easiest.

·        Students will need to wear their uniforms (long khaki pants and the Port Orange Music Academy shirt).  Students are also welcome to where Santa hats if they would like to.

·        Students will need to bring their instruments only (no cases).

·        Students are to be picked up in the Hardee’s parking lot on Dunlawton &  Ridgewood as soon as they are finished playing.  It is suggested that whoever is picking the students up, watch the parade near the end of the parade site so that your child doesn’t have to wait for you to get them.  In the past, we have had parents set chairs up and watch the parade from East of Port Orange Elementary and walk along side of our band to the pick-up area.  Then return back with their child to watch the rest of the parade.  We will have a sign out sheet, so please make sure you sign your child out.

*** Uniform shirts will be available to be picked up and paid for on Saturday, 12/3 between 9:00 – 10:00 AM.  We will  be set up in the church parking lot (where rehearsals are).  The cost of the shirt is $14.  If you are writing a check, please make payable to Port Orange Music Academy Boosters. ***

Bring your POMA pride… see you at the Parade!

A Note From The Band Booster President

Just a reminder!  All band students are being asked to bring in a bag of individually wrapped candy by this Wednesday.  We want to make up little candy bags for each student that they will get at the end of the parade as a treat.  So far, we only have 2 bags!  I am happy to make the bags up for the kiddos but I need the candy to fill ‘em!
Also – any parents that are interested in helping decorate our parade float – we need you!  The theme is “Christmas Classics” and with the help of the Garcia’s, we are turning our flatbed trailer into a Sleigh.  Any other ideas or decorations would be appreciated – we are running on a shoe string budget this year!  If you have any thing that we could use to decorate and/or would like to help, please email me ASAP and let me know.  We will be meeting Sunday morning at 9 to decorate the float.
Thanks again for your help!
